Abstract

A convenient one-pot process involving treatment of aromatic, heteroaromatic or aliphatic nitriles with an organometallic reagent (RLi or RMgX) followed by KCN/(NH₄)₂CO₃ gives 5,5′-disubstituted hydantoins in good yields.
