Abstract

Chiral symmetric diols have been examined as additives in the L-proline-catalyzed direct aldol reaction. A loading of 1 mol% of (S)-BINOL provides significant improvement in enantioselectivity, conversion efficiency, and yield. A transition state is proposed.
