Abstract
An inexpensive alloy of light lanthanides, called Mischmetall, can simply be converted in aqueous hydrochloric acid to a mixture of lanthanide trichloride hydrates. These complexes exhibited the same reactivity as cerium trichloride in the sodium borohydride 1,2-reduction of enones.
