Catalytic amounts of alkylidene derivatives of N-heterocyclic carbenes promote transesterification reactions. Because of their strong Brĝnsted/Lewis basicity, these organocatalysts can enhance the nucleophilicity of alcohols for acylation reactions with carboxylic esters.
