Abstract
A carboxyl-assisted, cobalt-catalyzed C-H functionalization of acrylic acids with formaldehyde provides butenolides. An optional treatment of the reaction medium with Na2CO3 after the catalytic reaction gives γ-dihydroxymethylated butenolides in one pot.
